The G2V2 tachograph is arriving,
mandatory retrofit!
The world of road transport is undergoing a major transformation with the imminent arrival of the new second-generation smart tachograph, the G2V2. This small black box, a true recorder of drivers' activities, is being modernized to meet today’s challenges. But that's not all — the retrofit of older models is underway, and drivers must prepare for new control requirements. Let’s take a closer look at these new regulations for 2025.
I. 56-Day Control: Enhanced Transparency
Starting January 1, 2025, controls will be reinforced: drivers must be able to justify their activities during the 56 days preceding the check. This means rigorous management of driving, working, and resting times, recorded on the driver card and validated on the tachograph. In the absence of a card, tachograph printouts must be presented. For vehicles equipped with an analog tachograph, disks and certificates of non-driving remain essential.
II. The Retrofit: A Requirement for International Transport
The transition to the G2V2 tachograph is mandatory for vehicles engaged in international transport. The deadline for this retrofit is set for 28 February 2025. (for vehicles equipped with an analogue or non-smart digital tachograph in international transport). Vehicles engaged solely in national transport are not subject to this obligation and may retain their old tachographs, including disc models.
What is a retrofit ?
It is an operation that involves replacing older components, namely first-generation tachographs (GEN1 V1), with more recent components, specifically second-generation tachographs (1C V2 or Gen2 V2 / G2V2). This upgrade brings notable improvements in terms of safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.
III. G2V2 Features: A Technology Powerhouse (H2)
The G2V2 tachograph offers new functionalities, including :
Geolocation data recording: The country of the start and end of the day, border crossings, and loading/unloading operations are recorded. Additionally, automatic geolocation is performed every 3 hours of driving.
Fraud reduction: the new G2V2 tachographs benefit from enhanced security at both software and hardware levels, offering increased protection with a more advanced security mechanism.
The automatic transmission of certain data regarding the truck and its driver to enforcement authorities driving nearby. This enables them to target vehicles for inspection, thereby reducing unexpected stops imposed on drivers during their journey.
The OSNMA system: this Open Service Navigation Message Authentication system is expected to ensure data security (deployment date still unknown).
Service Navigation Message Authentication should ensure data security
(deployment date still unknown to this day).
The arrival of the G2V2 tachograph marks a significant milestone in the modernization of road transport.
Although the retrofit may seem restrictive, it will enable greater transparency and better management of driving and rest times. The new G2V2 functionalities, in turn, will offer new opportunities for geolocation and data security.
