National light commercial vehicle tachograph: freedom of choice to simplify life for French transport operators!

National light commercial vehicle tachograph: freedom of choice to simplify life for French transport operators!

Since 26 January 2026, the DGITM has allowed companies to freely choose the working time recording system for their light commercial vehicles (> 2.5 t), including for domestic transport.

This reform corrects the anachronism of the decree of 6 March 2025 and offers simpler, more centralised management for French transport operators.

Tachograph or Individual Control Booklet (LIC): the choice is up to the company

Before this revision:

  • Light commercial vehicles used for domestic transport had to use LIC (Individual Inspection Logbook) or Mobilic.

  • Now, companies can opt for the tachograph for all their activities, both domestic and international if desired.

  • CSR rules do not automatically apply to domestic transport; only the rules of the Transport Code are taken into account.

Key benefits for carriers:

International transport: points still to be clarified

Some questions remain unanswered:

  • How can we distinguish between national and international periods for the 56 days of registration?

  • Will drivers using international tachographs and national LIC/Mobilic devices have to duplicate their records?

  • Will LIC/Mobilic data be recognised abroad?

The DGITM indicates that tachograph data will be included in Mobilic, but reverse synchronisation has not yet been defined.

Impacts on driver and light commercial vehicle management

Although this reform offers greater flexibility, it also entails responsibilities:

  • Centralise all tachograph data and driver cards

  • Analyse driving and rest times in accordance with the Transport Code

  • Train your drivers in the use of tachographs and national regulations.

  • Establish internal processes to simplify controls and prevent errors.
